Surtsey Sounds

Genre: instrumental, neo-classical

Straddling the boundaries between rock and classical, Surtsey Sounds take their place alongside the likes of Alexei Aigui and 4’33” or Rockoco at the slightly more improbable end of Russia’s musical scene. The group lines up more like a chamber ensemble than a rock group, with piano, violins and cellos prominent and guitar, bass and drums kept in the background. With a few exceptions, tracks are entirely instrumental.

The sound varies according to the occasion: on occasion it tends towards well-behaved, somewhat minimalist stuff like “Wake up, have a nice day”, which has something of a wildlife documentary soundtrack feel to it. But live shows can have a slightly harder edge to them, depending on the venue in question.
