Genre: neo-folk, darkwave
The Arkhangelsk trio has been branded Russia’s Dead Can Dance, but comparisons with German darkwave acts like Helium Vola and Qntal would be equally valid. Concert appearances are relatively rare, but tend to be striking: the band appears in masks and ancient Slavic garb, giving a shamanistic edge to proceedings.
Musically, it’s a combination of electronica and traditional rhythms and vocals. Of their albums to date, 2005’s Belovodiye (Whitewater Land) is often regarded as the best – and tracks like the mesmeric, ritual incantations of Ne Vely Vetri (The wind doesn’t blow) show why.
